Finding Unused CRM Fields

Posted on November 11th, 2011.

Often during an implementation of CRM a lot of attributes get added to entities, or get imported from another environment, and never end up being used for anything.  Sometimes those fields are earmarked for ‘future use’, but often times they are just rubbish and are only taking up space (in the abstract sense). In addition [...]

Constructing URLs in CRM Workflow

Posted on July 13th, 2010.

Consider the example below: On a contact record, I have an attribute called Full URL that is a complete URL and two other partial URLs (a root and suffix) that combined would create the same full URL. If I use these fields in a workflow e-mail like this: The resultant e-mail in the inbox looks [...]

Cannot find an organization database on server

Posted on June 1st, 2010.

I was doing an import on a customer’s server over the weekend and came across a strange one.  I had restored an organization database onto the SQL server, and had tried to import it using the Deployment Manager.  When I selected my SQL Server from the list in the Import Organization wizard, it came back [...]

Error synchronizing CRM for Outlook client

Posted on June 1st, 2010.

If you get a generic “A SQL Error has occurred”  when synchronizing your CRM for Outlook client, then you should likely run a CRM platform trace to get a better error message in order to aid your troubleshooting.  There are plenty of articles describing how to do that (including the hard way, and the easy [...]

Enabling a CRM User after their AD account has been deleted and re-created

Posted on March 23rd, 2010.

That’s the longest blog title I’ve ever written, so the blog post itself will be succinct. This happens all the time.  An employee leaves the company, so their CRM user profile gets disabled and then one of the guys in IT deletes their AD account.  A few months later, the ex-employee decides that grass was [...]

Posted on January 22nd, 2010.

We offer CRM as a hosted solution using the IFD capabilities of CRM 4.0.  We recently moved a new customer into Production, and a few days later they reported a problem when composing and viewing CRM emails (using the CRM form). The problem manifested itself as shown below – note the IFD sign-in screen where [...]

The element ‘form’ has invalid child element ‘events’

Posted on December 27th, 2009.

While sandboxing the upgrade of one of our CRM 3.0 customers to v4.0, I ran into an issue while customizing one particular entity. Here are the steps I normally take in this process: Redeploy the customer’s PROD CRM 3.0 databases in my sandbox VM using the ‘old’ stack of software (Win 2003, SQL 2005) In-place [...]

Customization Node MIA

Posted on September 27th, 2009.

Some days you just have to scratch your head.  Today one of my colleagues was getting set to make some customization changes to a CRM dev environment.  She logged in as the system admin user, went to the Settings area, but lo-and-behold, the Customization node was missing.  So she asked for help.   Easy, I [...]

Pushing CRM for Outlook settings to the masses

Posted on September 21st, 2009.

If you are lucky enough to be responsible for installing and maintaining a large number of CRM for Outlook clients, then you may have wondered if it’s possible to pre-set some of the user settings.  You may have also wondered when, exactly, you developed that facial tick that flares up whenever someone mentions CRM and [...]

Improving Form Performance in CRM 4.0

Posted on July 22nd, 2009.

Interesting article about how the MSCRM team has removed a bunch of un-used code from their forms in Rollup 5: http://blogs.msdn.com/crm/archive/2009/07/22/microsoft-dynamics-crm-customized-entity-form-performance.aspx Seems like a no-brainer, as long as RU5 doesn’t neuter your Workflow Async service.
